Lambe buys 30% share in major casino
08 August 2010 By Ian Kehoe
Asian betting entrepreneur Tim Lambe has snapped up 30 per cent of the one of the country’s largest casinos, the Fitzwilliam Casino and Card Club.
The Hong Kong-born businessman has bought out a number of other shareholders and now becomes one of the Dublin city club’s largest shareholders.
The deal was signed last week, after Lambe completed due diligence on the business, which is owned by a consortium of 20 individuals, who have varying stakes in the club.
David Hickson, the Fitzwilliam’s managing director, confirmed the deal. He said that Lambe had a ‘‘great deal of confidence in the club’s future’’, and that the Asian businessman was committed to helping to develop the casino.
Lambe, a former currency trader, was the founder of the betting website easybets.com, and was also behind Pan Index, the sports trading business. Now based in Britain, he recently purchased a casino in Birmingham, which is undergoing refurbishment.
The Fitzwilliam is one of the most prominent of the 50 casinos that have appeared in Ireland over the past decade.
It offers a range of card and roulette games, and also has a strong internet gaming business.
The club has 70,000 registered customers, about one third of whom play regularly.
Although casinos are technically illegal in Ireland, the club - like other casinos in Ireland - operates as a private member’s club.
However, the Fitzwilliam has suffered as a result of the recession and the decline in consumer spending. Hickson said that trade had fallen by 30 per cent over the past year. |
