Building society customer information pirated by gambling crook
A 23 year old Western Australian man will face the consequences of his acts this week when he appears in Perth Magistrate's court charged with multiple accounts of fraud, the proceeds of which he spent on Internet gambling sites.
The investigation into the Kewdale, Western Australia fraudster was triggered when a wave of disputed transaction complaints from customers of a Perth building society lead to the man being charged with fraud.
The building society received a raft of complaints in April from customers claiming they had been charged for transactions on their credit cards that weren’t theirs. A subsequent investigation by the police Major Fraud Squad led to a search warrant being executed at the man’s residence, where computers and documents were seized.
The major fraud squad will allege that the man used the customers’ details to obtain credit from Australian and overseas internet gambling sites to the value of approximately $155 000. This may escalate as further enquiries progress into over 700 other fraudulent gambling-related transactions valued in excess of $450 000. |
