IRISH POKER OPEN DECIDED

Irish eyes are smiling after a tough and long running heads up

Irish poker player Marty Smyth is smiling this week following his Euro 650 000 victory in the Irish Poker Open.

The money was on former WPT and EPT champ Roland De Wolfe, who dominated much of the final table action after starting with a short stack and building up in some remarkable hands of scintillating poker and taking out at least four of the survivors, but it was not to be.

In the heads up De Wolfe faced Smyth in a tough, drawn out series of hands with the final result going to the Irishman after he won a key pot where he caught a set of twos on the turn to crack De Wolfe's pocket trees, and then finished the tournament off by making a higher flush than his opponent in the final hand.

A tired Smyth told reporters: "Well, I'm kind of drained. But obviously very excited, the title and the trophy mean a lot to me, and the money. It's an honor, especially given the turn-out for the event."

There were big paydays all round for the final tablers - in addition to Smyth's winner's purse of Euro 650 000, De Wolfe collected Euro 325 000; third placed Sorel Mizzi picked up Euro 210 000; Daniel MHugh Euro 175 000; Brian O'Keefe Euro 130 000; Nicky Power Euro 100 000, and 7th placed Thomas Finneran was the only one to drop below six figures with a check for Euro 75 000.

Aug. 13 For Irish Open Poker Online Qualifiers

Euro 3 million prize-pool underwritten by Paddy Poker.com

Online poker firm Paddy Power Poker.com has announced a whopping Euro 1 million increase in its guarantee for the 2008 Irish Open poker tournament, for which on line qualifiers commence August 13.

The 2008 event sees the Irish Open expand with an increased buy-in of Euro 4 200 + Euro 300 registration fee, capacity for 1 000 players, and a Euro 3 million guaranteed prize pool.

Online qualification will begin on Paddy Power Poker.com on Monday, August 13, with a full schedule of daily feeders to a fortnightly grand final satellite.

A record-breaking field of 708 players played in the unique Dublin event in 2007 for over Euro 2.3 million in prize money, including World Series of Poker champions Dan Harrington and Carlos Mortensen. Last year's event was won by Northern Irish player Marty Smyth who lifted the Terry Rogers trophy, taking home Euro 650 000, after a tough heads-up battle with Roland De Wolfe.

Top players crowded the starting ranks in the 2007 event, and a similar demand for seats by the planet's top players is expected to again be a feature of the 2008 spectacular, billed as one of Europe's top poker tournaments. To accommodate the growing orders for tickets, the 2008 Irish Open will be split into two day ones, allowing for a capacity of 1 000 players.

Further details of the 2008 Irish Poker Open will be released in the coming weeks, and information is available on www.irishpokeropen.com, which will carry updates on qualification, venue, side events, betting, offline satellites, and other pertinent detail.

Euro 3 million or more prize-pool in prospect

The sponsor of the annual Irish Open poker tournament, Paddy Power Poker.com has reserved the facilities of Dublin's Citywest hotel as the venue for the next Euro 3 Million Guaranteed Irish Open. The weeklong festival of poker will take place over Easter Weekend from 19th to 24th March 2008.

Golden Ticket Bonus To Irish Open

Published: Sunday, October 07, 2007 mgowanbo.cc

Paddy First and a golden future add to the charm

Paddy Power Poker.com has added further incentives to the Euro 3 million Irish Open poker spectacular scheduled for 2008.

If the player who wins the 2008 Irish Open qualified online at the sponsor's site, he or she will win the golden ticket of poker - free entry to Europe's premier poker tournament for the next 5 years.

And the highest finishing Paddy Power Poker.com qualifier will receive a free entry to the 2009 Irish Open, even if he or she does not win the overall tournament outright.

A company spokesman said that everything about the Irish Open will be bigger in 2008. The buy-in has increased to Euro 4 500, the capacity has expanded to 1 000, the prizepool has risen to Euro 3 Million Guaranteed and now the biggest ever bonus incentive for qualifying online has been launched.

Online players have traditionally done well in the event. In 2007, Thomas Finneran from Galway outlasted more than 70 other online qualifiers to finish 7th out of 708 players. The previous year Sligo man Pat O'Callaghan also came close to the top prize, finishing 14th out of 339.

The spokesman added: "Thomas and Pat have blazed a trail and shown that our online players can compete with the very best in the world. My money is most definitely on one of our guys taking home the Terry Rogers trophy this year. As Paddy First we will look forward to welcoming him or her back for the next five years!"

Qualifiers are already underway on the poker website, with a packed schedule of daily feeders and fortnightly Grand Final Satellites.

The 2008 Irish Open will take place over Easter Weekend, 19th - 24th March, in Citywest Hotel, Dublin, Ireland's premier Conference, Leisure & Golf Resort.
