Online gambling group takes top honours in eGaming Awards

Online betting group Betfair took away the top prize at the third annual eGaming Awards held at the Natural History Museum last Friday night.

At a glittering industry awards banquet in London, the great and the good of the online gaming world gathered together to celebrate another great year, reports eGaming Review.

Alongside Betfair as Operator of the Year, Everest Poker won Poker Operator of the Year, 888 won Casino Operator of the Year and Sportingbet won European Sportsbook Operator of the Year.

And Mark Blandford, chairman of this year’s judge’s panel, was honoured as the inaugural winner of the Outstanding Contribution award.

In the commendation, eGaming Review said of Mark Blandford’s place in online gaming: “His knowledge of the industry, its workings, its personalities, and its potential is unrivalled. From a small online acorn to the gaming giant that it was before the US authorities intervened, he helped take Sportingbet to the very heights.”

Scott Longley, editor of eGaming Review, added: “As with previous years, we think the quality of the candidates for the Awards on the short-lists points to the strength and depth of the industry as a whole.”

The full list of winners:

Innovation of the year: Sky Bet
Online marketing campaign of the Year: Gala Coral
Offline marketing campaign of the Year: Unibet
Affiliate Programme of the Year: Chipleader
New channels and Mobile Operator of the Year: Sporting Index
Bingo Operator of the Year: JackpotJoy
Start-up Operator of the Year: Racingworld Technology
Socially Responsible Operator of the Year: Svenska Spel
Green Operator of the Year: Sky Bet
Hotshot Operator of the Year: Everest Poker
Land-links Partnership of the Year: 888
European Sportsbook of the Year: Sportingbet
Casino Operator of the Year: 888
Poker Operator of the Year: Everest Poker
Outstanding Contribution to online gaming: Mark Blandford
Operator of the Year: Betfair

Betfair topped the award by matching the forecasts of the weekend press in publishing its latest results.

Betfair's number of registered customers is now in excess of one million, according to the report with active users up to 443 300 at the end of April, up 57 percent on a year earlier.

Revenues of GBP182 million resulted in a 26 percent rise in underlying earnings to GBP 48 million, but one-off investments of around GBP 12 million contributed to a fall in pre-tax profits to GBP 25.3 million in the year to April 30, from GBP 36.5 million last time.

Because Betfair did not accept US customers prior to the passage of the UIGEA last October, the firm was not affected in terms of revenue, unlike its rivals  PartyGaming and 888.com.

Betfair has reduced its dependency on business from the United Kingdom, with overseas customers contributing 38 percent of total revenues, up from 32 percent in 2006. Betfair will shortly begin trading in Italy, in addition to holding existing licenses in the UK, Malta, Germany, Austria and Australia.

The company said it continued to work with governments worldwide to push for a regulated approach to the future liberalisation of gambling markets.
