Card dealing is about to become a more viable career move, thanks to a new state law that takes effect today.

the law raises the betting caps to $5 from $2 in limit poker games and allows for "no-limit" Texas hold 'em cash games.

"Like poker was meant to be played," says John Plenzick, owner of Real Deal Poker Academy in St. Petersburg (www.realdealpokeracademy.com). "You can’t intimidate people with a $2 limit."

Plenzick predicts more players -- and more serious players -- will start coming to gaming rooms, which means that those rooms will need to hire more dealers.

And with bigger pots, tips for dealers should increase, too.

(Until four years ago, Florida capped pots at $10. "It was impossible to make a living," Plenzick recalled.)

Equally significant in the law is a provision that allows card rooms at race tracks to remain open on nonracing days. Now, race tracks with limited racing schedules can offer dealers year-round jobs.
