Warner Wins Six-Handed WSOP Event 12

Another massive entry field in popular competition

World Series of Poker Event number 12 - the six-handed $1 500 No Limit Hold 'Em  - pulled in 1 427 players avid for a crack at a $481 697 winner's prize and one of the golden WSOP bracelets.  By the time the six man final table convened - away from the main playing areas at the Rio in a Bluff Magazine marquee to facilitate its webcast online - there had been plenty of action and excitement, a good auger for what was to come.

Canadian hardware store worker Jason Warner (22), who hails from the fair city of Vancouver held the chip lead at 945 000 as the players took their places, with his closest rival New Yorker David Zeitlin on 899 000 and the low man on the chip count totem pole Matt Brady with 381 000.

Surprisingly, the guy with the third highest chip count, Brian Miller was the first player to hit the rail in position 6, a victim of chip leader Warner.  The next to go - also at the hands of an aggressive Warner - was Matt Brady in fifth place.

Steve Olex took down the short-stacked David Mitchell-Lolis in the number 4 slot for the first of the six-figure payouts at $123 689. But not long after Olex himself became a victim of an astute series of moves from Zeitlin that sent Olex to the rail in the number 3 position at $186 020 and set the scene for a promising heads up between Zeitlin and Warner.

It initially looked as if it was going to be Zeitlin all the way, but one hand proved decisive as Zeitlin came in powerfully with pocket sevens, and Warner could only muster pocket fives for the battle. The flop and turn changed little, but a five on the river rescued Warner, giving him a lead he would retain through to the end.

Now short-stacked, Zeitlin became more cautious and it was Warner's turn to ratchet up the pressure. The New Yorker did his best but Warner was in the driving seat and the cards liked him to boot - it was only a matter of minutes before it was all over.  Jason Warner collected the main $481 697 prize and the bracelet, leaving the second place payday of $269 778 to Zeitlin. This was Warner's first WSOP exposure and his second WSOP event appearance.
