William Hill Rises Most Since October as Gaming Margin Recovers
Jan. 20 -- William Hill Plc, the U.K. bookmaker with about 2,300 stores, rose the most in three months in London trading after saying its betting margin from sports results recovered.
The shares rose as much as 5 percent. William Hill said full-year gross win margins were between 17 percent and 18 percent. The company’s margin had fallen to 15.4 percent in the third quarter after fewer draws in soccer games meant gamblers won more often on the matches.
The company also said its online venture with Playtech Ltd. delivered a “strong” performance. Full-year earnings before interest and taxes will be about 35 percent higher, the London- based company said today in a statement.
“Gross win margins are normalizing, the online business is now fully integrated, the FIFA World Cup should boost revenues, and the balance sheet risk has been removed,” said Nick Batram, an analyst at KBC Peel Hunt in an e-mailed note. Batram raised his forecast for full-year pretax profit to 193 million pounds ($314 million), from 182.9 million pounds.
William Hill also said today Chairman Charles Scott will leave the company at the end of 2010. Scott had been chairman since 2004, and joined the board in 1999 before it started selling shares on the stock exchange.
The company appointed Neil Cooper as finance director in November after Simon Lane decided to leave the company. Cooper will join this year.
The stock rose as much as 10.6 pence, the most since Oct. 19, to 196.2 pence, and traded at 194.8 pence at 9:28 a.m., giving the company a market value of 1.37 billion pounds. |
